Last year, scientists from MIT and Harvard University reported that if a person ate enough calories, their health could improve by four percent. A second study in the Journal of the American Medical Association says more Americans might benefit from increasing the amount of dietary fiber consumed.
The latest addition to the list of studies to show a link between eating a good diet and better health has been published in the British Medical Journal.
To begin, the scientists gave participants dietary samples of foods that weren't "good for you." A control group had high levels of total and unsaturated fats, including red meat, olive oil, and poultry meat. Both groups were also asked to weigh different amounts of one to two additional grams of a different fatty acid each. A second study also looked at subjects drinking the same amount of calories in their food each month, and comparing them with the same group of participants no more than 30 days later on the morning after the first food change.
By comparison, an untrained group had a significant increase in HDL cholesterol in the morning, indicating the link between an increase in HDL and a drop in LDL cholesterol in the afternoon.
