I don't think there's any hard evidence, but it's hard to make apples-to-apples comparisons over those three decades, particularly considering that apples-to-apples is not a very popular food in America. Most people choose to eat non-apple desserts, as they see them as healthy, and that doesn't make them bad eaters. Other times, like when I was a kid, I'd rather eat something healthier than something I couldn't get enough of, and I'd never eat too much sweets.
