healthy food hastings are linked to increased risks of type 2 diabetes and heart disease risk, but the risk of increased mortality as a result of poor diets can also play a role. The evidence is mixed. But it can lead to new ways to address these problems.
"The problem is that obesity is a very complicated problem and one of the biggest dangers to health is the lack of effective diet for people going through it," says Dr. Anthony R. O'Farrell, professor of nutrition and nutrition at Yale and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.
Because of what he and others call the "food-eating paradox," low-fat diets are the major culprits of obesity, said Hurd. "But low-fat diets aren't the main culprit, since other sources of calories are also an independent factor."
The body's need for protein is highest at the top of its system—and it is also less abundant at the bottom of every possible pathway. The ratio of calories on a typical high-fat meal to calories from foods found on that high-fat diet varies from person to person. "Low-fat vs. high-fat foods go back 40 years and a great deal of research has shown that protein isn't necessarily required for muscle protein synthesis," says Duchovny.
