There was significant heterogeneity in the findings across dietary groups. In a meta-analysis of 12 prospective cohort studies, we found a significantly higher proportion of men and women classified as abstainers by age at baseline (49.6%) compared with those classified as vegans (34.3%).
For some analyses, data on meat consumption from food sources were analysed separately (see here and here and here). In our meta-analysis, we investigated whether dietary changes in lifestyle related to meat consumption were associated with changes in risk of cardiovascular disease (SADS) in different groups of individuals.
Methods
In addition to a multivariable logistic regression approach, we used non-randomised, repeated measures ANOVA with the logistic regression method as the main statistical test. We examined the effect of meat intake and diabetes on blood plasma cholesterol profile and glyomegases assessed by serum LDL-C (36 mg/dL and 18% of serum cholesterol); and the relationship between the changes in serum LDL-C and dietary intakes of whole grains, dairy products and red meats.
